DIY Rope & Dowel Planter

Oct, 11, 2017

It’s time for another Monthly DIY Challenge! This time around we’re all working with rope and SHOCKER; I made a planter ha. I feel like that’s always my go to. But I did really need one so I’m totally cool with it. I wanted to make something for the nursery and adding some greenery is always a good idea to liven up a space!

I started out by staining my dowel rod in my go to stain color: Dark Walnut. Then I coated it with some poly to seal it up.

Next you’ll want to cut a really long piece of rope and start wrapping it around one end of your dowel about an inch or so in from the end.

Use your hot glue gun to glue down both ends and then measure out how much rope you want at the top for hanging and then continue to wrap the rest of the rope around the opposite end of your dowel until you’re left with this:

Now you could totally leave it like this and use some “s” hooks or other type of hooks to hang a plant or anything else from, but I took it a little further.

I’ve had this vase from West Elm for years and it’s always made it’s way into my decor temporarily but I never really found a place for it that I loved. Since it has holes in it, it was perfect to use for this project. I just strung another piece of string through two holes on the back and then tied them to the dowel where the rope stopped wrapping.

And voila!

I’m still waiting on some decor to come for the nursery, so I grabbed some things from other rooms in our house to style this corner up a bit for some pictures. I don’t want to give too much away and this isn’t how it will look in the end, but it’s getting there!
